Waterton and Calgary

Pour notre 6eme semaine dans notre trip nord américain, nous sommes allés dans le parc national de Waterton, classé dans le patrimoine mondial de l’Unesco, dans l’Alberta. La partie Canadienne de ce parc est petite par rapport à la partie Américaine. Nous n’avons pas tenté de passer du côté Américain, de peur de voir notre visa de 6 mois commencer.
Cependant, il y avait suffisamment à faire dans ce paysage fabuleux, encore une fois, à l’état sauvage.

Le camping était dans le village, à côté du lac et au milieu des nombreuses montagnes du massif des Rocheuses. Dans ce camping, pas de moustiques, ou autres chenilles, mais cette fois des créatures marrantes appelés gaufres (de la famille des Géomyidés). Ils font des trous partout dans le camping pour se cacher. Dès qu’ils sortent de leurs trous, ils se mettent debout et nous observent ! Dès qu’on s’approche, ils retournent dans leurs trous. Nous avons réussi à prendre quelques photos en mettant la GoPro près du trous… C’était très marrant 😉

Nous avons croisés 2 ours sur le bord des routes : un grizzli et un ours brun. Aussi de nombreuses biches qui se baladaient dans la ville et le camping, Louise pourra en témoigner : une biche s’est approchée très près d’elle lorsque que nous étions à table. J’ai du intervenir pour la faire reculer… autrement, qui sait ce qu’il aurait pu arriver ?!!!

Nous avons eu 2 jours magnifiques, mais la météo s’est ensuite corsée avec une journée de pluie quasiment non stop : presque toute la journée enfermé dans le camping-car. Lorsqu’il s’est arrêté de pleuvoir, la vie reprenait : tout le monde était de retour dehors.
Le lendemain, malgré une température assez fraîche, nous avons mangé un barbecue avec nos voisins Yvonne, Holly et leur chien Penny. Louise a mangé son premier hotdog (qu’elle a aimé), et nous avons mangé de délicieux s’mores pour le désert.

Après ces 3 semaines à l’écart de la civilisation (très peu de wifi !), nous avons pris la route de Calgary pour nous installer dans un appartement. Nous avons vidé le camping-car dans l’appartement : sera-t-il possible de tout reprendre avec nous dans notre prochaine voiture ? Pas sûr… (à suivre dans le prochain épisode…).

Il était temps de rendre le camping-car. Le bilan de ces 3 semaines est positif : beaucoup de place, de confort, du chauffage la nuit, une super cuisine toute équipé, un vrai lit, etc… Au niveau de la conduite, j’avais beaucoup d’appréhension au début : je conduisais comme à l’auto-école !!! Mais au Canada les routes sont larges et il y avait peu de monde en cette période de l’année : donc très peu de difficulté et aucun dommage à signaler. Ouf…
Par contre, la consommation est très importante, même si le prix de l’essence est assez bas ici.

Nous l’avons échangé contre un SUV. Dommage, pas de surclassement cette fois-ci et il n’est vraiment pas grand: il faudra faire avec pour nos 10 jours de camping avant de retrouver un appartement à Vancouver.

Il nous restait 3 jours à passer sous le soleil de Calgary (mais rien à voir avec la canicule en France !). Nous en avons profité pour retourner à la piscine et acheter les derniers accessoires pour camper : matelas, plaque chauffante, glacière, etc…

Pour notre dernier jour, nous avons pris le train pour visiter le centre de Calgary. Nous avons trouvé une très jolie ville et très reposante (mais bon, c’était dimanche). Nous avons apprécié le parc, qui se trouve sur une petite île : jardin d’enfants, glace. Louise a même croisé 3 princesses.

Au programme la semaine prochaine, retour dans la nature avec les parcs nationaux de Banff et Jasper.
Les nuits s’annoncent fraîches, avec quelques jours de pluie… mais les prévisions changent constamment, alors restons optimistes et croisons les doigts.

Hello Guys,

We started the sixth week of our north american road trip in Waterton national park in Southern Alberta. It is on the US border and is part of Waterton-Glacier International peace park with the largest part of the park (Glacier park) in Montana (USA). The whole park is a UNESCO world heritage site. Unfortunately we couldn’t cross the border to go into the American part of the park as it would’ve meant starting our sixth month visa much too early. However there was more than enough to see in the Canadian part of the park.

We stayed in Waterton village campsite which is in the village of Waterton and on the shores of lake Waterton surrounded by the Rocky mountains. The view was absolutely breathtaking.

In this campsite there were no mosquitoes or other hordes of creepy crawlies but instead some very cute funny little creatures called ground squirrels or gophers! They had holes all over the campsite and as soon as the sun was up they would be out standing on their hind legs and keeping watch or eating. They made “pip pip” noises very similar to a bird! As soon as we got too close they would run back into their holes. We managed to get some photos of one by placing the camera very close to it’s hole and activating it from a distance!

 

There were also lots of dear in the village that would come out in large numbers in the evening to eat grass or lick the salt off our neighbour’s kayaks! One even came right up to Louise when we were having dinner!

There are lots of amazing long hikes to do in this park but unfortunately with the kids this wasn’t possible for us. We did however take a drive across the park to do a short hike along a canyon known as red rock canyon due to the lovely red colour of its rocks. The drive was spectacular and on the way back we were lucky enough to see three bears: two black bears and a young grizzly bear.

The village was very nice and most of all had a great playground with sprinklers that the children enyoyed!

We had two days of lovely weather but unfortunately one day of pouring rain where we had to stay in the campervan. We made it up by going to eat in the village for dinner!

On the last evening we had a lovely dinner with our neighbours Yvonne, Holly and their very sweet dog Penny. Louise ate her first hotdog (which she loved) and we all had delicious s’mores for dessert. We should hopefully see them again next week as our paths will cross again.

After three weeks on the road in the camper van we reached Calgary on Thursday evening

The time just flew by so fast. We all really enjoyed it and the large camper van proved itself to be very convenient! However Christophe was relieved to return it safe and sound!

 

We exchanged it for a car and this time unfortunately we were not upgraded. We have a rather small SUV into which we are all going to have to fit plus our luggage, camping gear, food and other bits and bobs… Not sure how we are going to manage!!

We are staying in an apartement in a quiet residential area in Calgary. It’s nice getting back to civilisation for a bit and having decent wifi to be able to talk to family and friends.

We spent three whole days in Calgary in which we took the kids swimming again and to an indoor play area as well as shopping to buy some equipment for the next part of our trip.

On our last day we took public transport and went to visit downtown Calgary. We found it nice as not too big and quite relaxed. There is a very nice park in the centre and the kids enjoyed the playgrounds. Louise even saw three Princesses: Elsa, Cinderella and Belle!

Tomorrow we hit the road again for 9 days of camping….
