Vancouver Island

C’est la fin… de notre périple canadien.  Nous avons passé nos 10 derniers jours sur l’île de Vancouver. Pour traverser la mer des Salish, nous avons pris un ferry jusqu’à Nanaimo, sur la côte Est de l’île. 2 heures pour la traversée en ferry, puis 4 heures de route pour rejoindre notre camping, situé à l’Ouest de l’Île, entre Tofino et Ucluelet.

Cette partie de l’île est recouverte de forêt tropicale tempérée, en anglais : rainforest… On a vite compris pourquoi : dès la première nuit, la pluie se faisait entendre… Le lendemain nous avons pris notre petit déjeuné… en k-way !!!
Mais la pluie ne nous a pas arrêté : nous avons enchaîné par une randonnée de 5 kms sur la côte d’Ucluelet sous un ciel très menaçant. Les enfants ont pris beaucoup de plaisir dans ces paysages magnifiques.

L’après-midi, la pluie s’était intensifié… nous décidons alors de visiter l’aquarium d’Ucluelet. Cet aquarium possède de nombreux bassins dans lesquels les enfants ont pu toucher les créatures locales : des étoiles de mer, des anémones, des coquillages, et des crabes bernard l’hermite. Louise a passé énormément de temps avec ces derniers : elle les mettait dans ses mains et attendait de les voir partir 🙂

Nos voisins dans le camping, Kelly et Jason, sont venu spécialement d’Edmonton pour se marier en secret sur l’Île, lieu de leur première rencontre. La cérémonie a eu lieu sur la plage avec leurs 2 enfants, Spencer et Felix, et les témoins. Le soir, nous avons eu la chance de partager avec eux leur gâteau de mariage. Une bien belle soirée au coin du feu.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Le lendemain, deuxième jour de pluie : cette fois nous décidons de visiter Tofino. Déjeuner dans un restaurant avec un bus dans lequel les enfants peuvent jouer… Bonne idée pour la tranquillité pour des parents.
Sur la route, entre Tofino et notre camping, il y a une plage de sable de 16 kms de long : “Long beach”. Cette plage magnifique se trouve dans la réserve du parc naturel Pacific Rim. Avec ses vagues parfois très hautes c’est un vrai repère de surfeurs, réputé dans toute l’Amérique du Nord.

En fin d’après-midi, on pouvait voir enfin un peu de ciel bleu… les 2 jours suivants ont été très ensoleillés. Ouf!!!
Le lendemain, on est allé à la fête annuelle local d’Ucluelet : “Ukee days”. De la musique, des attractions pour enfants, etc… Ça a été l’occasion de goûter enfin à la poutine… Après toutes les recommandations, je devais bien y goûter, et bien je n’ai pas été déçu.
2 jours de plage sur le sable de long beach… château de sable avec les enfants… ou contre Tom car ce dernier a passé son temps à les détruire… Beaucoup de vagues : un plaisir malgré l’eau froide de l’océan pacifique.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Après 4 jours dans ce camping, on demonte la tente pour rejoindre Victoria où Johanna était impatiente de retrouver un peu de confort dans un AirBnb.
En arrivant sur les lieux, notre hôte n’était pas très à l’aise en nous voyant : ‘vous ne deviez pas arriver demain ?’ !!! Effectivement, en regardant de nouveau les dates nous avons fait une erreur d’une journée 🙁
Heureusement, il nous propose de planter notre tente dans son jardin, sur le terrain de foot… Sauvés !!!

L’appartement est situé dans une très belle propriété, à 20 minutes du centre historique de Victoria, avec une piscine, un trampoline, un poulailler, un grand potager, etc… Les résidents du AirBnb peuvent prendre des œufs et des légumes sur place… Super :-).
Louise a passé beaucoup de temps avec les poules. Sa meilleure amie était une dinde appelée “Rainbow” (arc-en-ciel).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Le lendemain, nous sommes allés dans le centre de Victoria où nous avons pu admirer les animaux dans le parc Beacon Hill… Puis une visite du port de Victoria, juste à côté du fort…
C’est une très jolie ville reposante que nous avons découvert.

Nous avons visité notre deuxième musée d’insectes : “Bug Zoo”. Nous avons touché de nombreuses créatures comme un phasme géants, une mante religieuse et pour finir une tarentule.
A la fin de la visite, nous avons acheté des chips aux crickets. Très très bon… Un vrai délice pour les enfants et pour moi.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Demain une grosse journée de voyage nous attend : nous devons rendre notre voiture de location, puis prendre le bateau pour rejoindre Seattle dans la soirée.

Hello all!

We have spent the last ten days on Vancouver island. We got here on a two hour ferry ride which we took from the port of Tsawwassen to Nanaimo on the east coast of the island.
We then drove 4 hours across the island to our campsite in the town of Ucluelet on the south western coast of the island. The western coast of the island is a temperate rainforest. It’s very green and beautiful but as the name indicates it rains!!
During our first night the rain started to pitter patter on our tent and the next morning we had breakfast under a light drizzle wearing raincoats.
The rain stopped a bit and we took a beautiful 5km hike called the “Wild Pacific Trail” along the coast and through the rainforest south of Ucluelet. The children walked really well and had fun running up and down the trail.
That afternoon we went to the aquarium in Ucluelet. It is small but very kid friendly. It only holds local sea creatures which they keep at most for one season before releasing them. It has lots of touch pools where Louise had great fun touching star fish, sea anenomes and her favourite of all, hermit crabs!!

 

 

 

 

 

 

Our neighbours in the campsite were a lovely couple from Edmonton called Kelly and Jason, their sons Spencer and Felix and their very cute dog Daphne. They came to the island to get married in secret! They had the ceremony on a beach with just their boys, the person marrying them and one another person as a witness.
That evening they invited us to sit round their fire and share their wedding cake and fizzy wine! We had a lovely evening!

The rain started up again the next night and carried on the next morning so we had to have breakfast in our tent. A bit later on it cleared up and we went to the very pretty town of Tofino about 30 kms up along the coast. Tofino is considered one of the best surf towns in North America and has a very cool laid back vibe about it.
We had lunch in a very nice restaurant which had a part of it’s old purple catering truck on the terasse for kids to play in. Tom and Louise had lots of fun and we had a peaceful meal!

 

 

 

 

In the afternoon after a stop at the village playground we went to Long beach on our way back home and took it in turns walking with Louise while Tom slept. Beautiful Long beach is situated in Pacific Rim national park. It is sandy, 16 km long and bordered by rainforest. It is a hot spot for surfers but not good for swimmers due to strong currents and rip tides.

That evening we shared a bottle of wine and a cheesecake that we brought back from town with our lovely neighbours. Louise had fun playing with Felix.
We were very lucky as we had sunny weather the next two days. Ucluelet has an annual summer event “Ukee days” which we were lucky enough to be there for. It’s a local fête with lots of attractions for children, music, food and various other stands. We stayed there from 10 am until 2. The children had goes on the bouncy castles, playing with dolls and lego in the “kidzone” and stroking animals in the little petting farm.
We then spent the afternoon on the beach at Florencia bay. The children making sandcastles and splashing in the waves. That evening we had smores with Kelly, Jason and their boys.

 

 

 

 

 

 

The next morning our neighbours were packing up to go and so we decided to stay in the campground so that Louise could play with Felix and Spencer until they left. They ended up watching “The Trolls” in our tent!

We went for lunch near Tofino at a food truck where we queud up for quite some time to eat their delicious burritos. The afternoon we went to Long Beach where the children played.
The next day we packed up our things and drove across the island to Victoria to an airbnb. When we got there we realised that we had made a mistake and that we were only due there the following day!! Luckily the owners let us pitch our tent in their garden!!
The airbnb was 20 minutes away from downtown Victoria in a quiet area. It is a little house in the family’s large garden and just next to a vegetable garden and a large chicken run. Louise loved going to see the chickens and made friends with a very friendly turkey called Rainbow! The family have 8 children aged from 5 to 21 who are mostly all home schooled.

 

 

 

 

 

 

We visited downtown Victoria, which is pretty and has a very British feel about it. We went to a lovely little zoo called “Victoria bug zoo” where we saw and were able to hold lots of very large and funny creepy crawlies from around the world such as a praying mantis, giant stick insects and even for Christophe and I a tarantula!

 

 

 

 

 

 

We have now come to the end of our Canadian roadtrip. The three months have just flown by!
Tomorow we’re off to the USA!!!
